The 2014 Port Charlotte Islay Barley whisky embodies everything an Islay-crafted whisky can and should be. Beyond simply adding complexity and depth to this single malt, the barley used in its crafting truly connects it to its terroir.
Complex and intriguing, the 2014 Port Charlotte Islay Barley showcases the delicate balance of fruit and smoky aromas for which this single malt is renowned.
It is pale amber in color.
Malty biscuits and peaty embers open on the nose, followed by aromas of sweet vanilla and notes of honey, caramel, and crème brûlée. As the whisky opens up, its fruity character takes over, with notes of lemon zest and peat smoke, followed by grapefruit, ripe melon, peach, and crisp red apple. Port Charlotte's characteristic maritime notes are balanced by a touch of woody spices, nutmeg, and cinnamon, highlighting the depth and complexity of this single malt.
On the palate, citrus aromas are quickly followed by sweet ripe fruit and a gentle peat smoke. A subtle maritime character emerges, with this sandy minerality complemented by toasted oak. On the second sip, the balance between fruit and smoke strengthens, with a blend of apricot, peach, and ripe melon delicately enveloped by roasted heather and peaty embers. Maturation in American bourbon barrels brings lightly toasted oak notes, with a hint of coconut, creamy marzipan, and tobacco.
Orchard fruit and the sweetness of toasted oak leave a beautifully balanced finish, while subtle smoky notes coat the palate. This single malt is bottled at 50% ABV and peated to 40 ppm. Its maturation profile consists of 84% first-fill bourbon casks, 8% second-fill virgin oak casks, and 8% second-fill Bordeaux wine casks. With notes of malted biscuit and peat, opening onto a sweet blend of apricot, peach, and juicy melon, this 2014 vintage showcases fruity and peaty aromas in perfect balance.
A COMMUNITY COMMITMENT
The barley harvest for this 2014 vintage is the result of the hard work and passion of eight local farmers on the Isle of Islay: Craig Archibald at Craigens, Ian McKerrell at Island Farm, Raymond Fletcher at Dunlossit, Andrew Jones at Coull, Mark French at Rockside, Raymond Stewart at Sunderland, and Islay Estates at Mulindry. These agricultural partnerships not only help develop new soil improvement practices and encourage crop diversification, but also support the island's integral agricultural community.
