Ardbeg Corryvreckan Whisky won two awards at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2018. It was also voted Best Single Malt of the No-Age Scotch Whiskies at the 2019 World Whiskies Awards. Ardbeg Corryvreckan is magnetic; it draws us in and irresistibly plunges us into an endless whirlpool... With this Single Malt, Ardbeg wanted to reference "Coirebhreacain," which means "cauldron of the speckled seas" in English and "cauldron of bubbling water" in French. It is a reference to the third largest whirlpool in the world, located between the islands of Jura and Scarba, north of Islay, where only the bravest souls dare to venture. Legend has it that a young Viking named Breacan had to survive three days and three nights in the heart of this whirlpool to prove his love to the daughter of the Lord of the Isles. Like the whirlpool, Ardbeg Corryvreckan is a powerful and virile whisky partially aged in new French oak barrels. Its 57.1% ABV develops swirling aromas of deep peat with peppery notes and a magnificent balance. Ardbeg Corryvreckan is one of the distillery's latest permanent releases. The nose is incredibly smoky and roasted. First, the peat weighs down the powerful distillate. Then, notes of yeast and beer evoke the washback. Finally, the barley being stirred takes us back to the malting floor. A return to the roots, so to speak... Notes of methane even hark back to the origins of creation. The color is old gold with copper highlights. The palate is rich and very concentrated. It gives the sensation of participating in the genesis of a single malt. One imagines the peat vapors rising to the top of the still, the heat of distillation, the coppery notes, and the soot on the walls. On the finish, it takes time for its tempestuous character to fade a little. However, it stubbornly refuses to be confined by wood. The cereal is clearly rendered. It becomes oceanic (smoked fish, sea spray, ink) and still ends up offering a hint of almond marmalade. Superb salty bitterness. This is a peated whisky with over 55 ppm.
