Mount Gay Single Estate Rum is a limited edition. On the nose, rich, dense layers of sweet molasses, sticky caramel, and crème brûlée lead the way, with heaps of floral vanilla and a touch of sweet funk and leather nestled beneath. The palate has a superbly floral profile, with notes of honey and hibiscus, before large portions of juicy guava and pear arrive. Leathery oak joins time, with piles of sweet vanilla beans throughout. The finish brings a tangy touch of candied lemon joined with a tickle of clove, with pink pepper creeping around the edges, while floral vanilla and buttery esters linger. An exciting addition to the Mount Gay collection, and the first in what will become an annual series from the Barbados distillery. Here we have his first Single Estate rum. Produced from sugarcane grown solely on the Mount Gay Estate in Barbados, and intentionally grown to make molasses for rum production, rather than to produce sugar, the 2023 edition includes a blend of the harvests of cane from 2016 and 2017. Fermented with a unique yeast strain at Mount Gay, the rum matured for six to seven years, before being bottled at a satisfying 55% ABV.
